Texas Longhorns open football camp

The Texas Longhorns opened preseason football camp this week.  The Longhorns will have four weeks to determine who the starting quarterback will be this year.  The Longhorns will also use the camp to develop better offensive chemistry.

The Longhorns are considered the best defensive unit in the Big 12 conference this year.  Some added weapons on offense will try to assist the defense in winning football games this year.  Highly touted running back Johnathan Gray and returning running back Malcolm Brown hopes to take the pressure off of the quarterback position this year.

Local players and wide receivers Caleb Jones from Austin High and Daje Johnson from Hendrickson high school hope to become vital parts of a productive offense this year. When asked do he has a preference to what position he wants to play Johnson said, “I don't have a preference. I can play both sides of the ball. I got accepted at DB. They want me to play on offense at wide receiver and running back.  I will probably stick to offense, but I am pretty equal on both sides of the ball.”

Jones said, “I'm excited to have a fresh start with everything. I'm trying to carry on the legacy of my dad being in the NFL [former Dallas Cowboys LB Robert Jones]. I want to do the same thing. My cousin is a wide receiver at Auburn, and he's been successful. I want to be successful, and that's what I'm looking forward to.”

Gray was considered one of the top running backs in the country and will add much need depth to the Longhorns running back stable.  Jones was a top ten rated wide receiver in the nation last year.  Johnson will be used in the wildcat formations and on special teams.

The biggest question entering this season will be he will lead the team form the quarterback position.  David Ash and Case McCoy are competing for the starting nod.  Both quarterbacks had sparks while at the helm last season, but both were inconsistent.

Ash said, “This summer I worked on accuracy. I worked on foot quickness. I tried to spend time with the players – getting to know the young guys and building a relationship with everyone.
